I have serious trouble with the label slave as its used in these sorts of conversations for that very reason, among others. One of them is the baggage attached to the concept, which for most people generally means chattel slavery, such as in the old south and that practiced in parts of Africa and the Middle/Far East today. That is dictionary-definition slavery, forced, coercive, chattel slavery and it is also captivity. I feel, in a vague sort of way that calling what I want slavery trivializes the reality that those chattel slaves live every day of their lives..not to mention their descendants. Were I to have children, which is highly unlikely at this point, they would not be slaves. But that baggage is a minor point here. All of that aside, what is relevant is that when the dictionary defines slavery it means chattel slavery. Consensual-slavery is not chattel slavery.

I have trouble with the appellation slave in the consensual context for many specific reasons. The first is because so often what is being said is, you are a slave because you cant leave. Without going down the road of whether I can really leave or not, I am struck by the fact that if I cant leave then I am a prisoner or a captive, but not a slave. Inability to leave may be a literal or emotional or mental fact or some combination of all three, but that doesnt make for slavery. Recall, for example the underground railroad or the ability to purchase or be purchased for the purposes of attaining freedom of a chattel slave. Inability to leave volitionally is a state specific to consensual-slavery.

The following characteristics are true of slavery as defined by the dictionary. All slaves are owned. All slaves are possessions. All slaves are property. All slaves serve. All service by a slave is servitude. Or, as described by Encarta, the definitive characteristics of slaves are as follows

Their labor or services are obtained through force;

But am I really property in any meaningful sense of the word except as between my master and I and is that enough to satisfy this aspect of the definition? And, if I am property, how did I, in fact, become property. What made me that? Am I really property in the true sense and meaning of the word? Held at will and disposable at the will of the owner, used or not used at the will of the owner?

I am thus forced to conclude that I am not and can never be a slave because ownership is not possible, at least as it is described so pithily by Encarta unless I fall afoul of some version of the ubiquitous white slavers of old. I am, however,seeking consensual-slavery. The question becomes, then, what is consensual-slavery, how does it happen and how does it differ from chattel slavery?

Slavery, as used in discussing consensual-slavery relationships, is generally held to exist and happens based on the following criteria...more or less...so far as I can determine.

The slave has chosen to be a slave.

The slave has chosen her owner/master.

The slave is submissive by nature; in other words as a function of personality.
