Every night a boy tells himself over and over that he will get up at half-past four; and every morning the same boy wakes at exactly that time. The boy is fifteen and believes that he is in control of everything and that the world revolves around him. A Sunrise on the Veld tells the story of the realization of a boy that things happen all the time everywhere that he has no control over.

The very beginning of this story introduces a boy that believes he has total control over every aspect of himself

Every night that winter he said aloud into the dark of the pillow

Half-past four! Half-past four! till he felt his brain Help with essay on Awakening An essay on A Sunrise on the VeldBy Doris Lessing

had gripped the words and held them fast… …It was half-past four to the minute, every mourning… …he had once stayed awake three nights running, to prove that he could, and then worked all day, refusing even to admit that he was tired; and now sleep seemed to him a servant to be commanded and refused.

(Doris Lessing)

The boy wakes up this way every morning to go bird hunting; but the morning on which this story takes place is a particularly different one.

The boy finds his way to the vlei and his so intrigued by it that the joy of just living takes over and he forgets all about what he has come to do. He runs madly around and says aloud, "I contain the world. I can make of it what I want. If I choose, I can change everything that is going to happen it depends on me, and what I decide now." He is so full of life, or so he thinks, and he can do all things that he sets his mind to because he is in control of everything. His thoughts are only to be broken later by the sound of a scream of pain. He follows the sounds till he sees a ragged buck that is being attacked by ants and cannot escape. He watches the dear fall to the ground and is about to shoot it to put it out of it's misery when he realizes that if he would not have come the buck would have died like that anyway. He realizes that things like this go on all the time, everywhere; and for the first time ever in his life he realizes that, "I can't stop it. I can't stop it. There is nothing I can do."

The boy who is fifteen finally comprehends that the world does not revolve around him. He may think that he has complete control but he doesn't. He does not contain the world-it contains him.

The boy examines the carcass of the buck to see what could have caused it to be so vulnerable to the ants and finds that its back leg is completely broken. An image of himself half-shooting at a deer crosses his mind. He thinks he missed and he doesn't bother to track it down. Although the image is not specified as a real event, it is still hard for him to accept that he could have caused the suffering that he just witnessed.

The title A Sunrise on the Veld means so much more than the sun rising one day in Africa. A sunrise represents something new like a new morning or waking up. The author's title tells a coming of age as represented by waking up. From the very beginning so many things make this clear, although, only by rereading the story does the mind pick up on the little clues.

In life there are many sunrises. People find something they know to be true false with one experience. Life is like a day. The sun rises and the sun sets and there is nothing, nothing you can do to change it.
