"It is this kind of bringing of assorted experiences of everyday life to focus that the cockfight, set aside from that life as "only a game" and reconnected to it as "more than a game," accomplishes, and so creates what, better than typical or universal, could be called a paradigmatic human event that is, one that tells us less what happens than the kind of thing that would happen if, as is not the case, life were art and could be as freely shaped by styles of feeling as Macbeth and David Copperfield are." (Geertz 1).

This quote provides a very good example of why I found the entire Geertz essay hard to read and even harder to understand.

First of all, Geertz's sentence structure can make almost anything seem very confusing. His sentences are needlessly long. Sometimes a single sentence can be a paragraph long! For example, he writes, "In the midst of the third match, with hundreds of people, including, still transparent, myself and my wife, fused into a single body around the ring, a superorganism in the literal sense, a truck full of policement armed with machine guns roared up." As for the statement, "It was this kind of bringing of assorted experiences of everyday life … if … life were art and could be as freely shaped by styles of feeling as Macbeth and David Copperfield are." I've read it over and over again and I still don't quite understand what Geertz is trying to say. Is he saying that the game of cockfighting is more than just a game to the Balinese? And if so, then what exactly does the reference to Macbeth and David Copperfield have to do with anything?

Secondly, I found that Geertz used technical terminology which made his essay even more difficult to understand. For example, he writes, "The madness has some less visible dimensions, however, because although it is true that cocks are symbolic expressions or magnifications of their owner's self, the narcissistic male ego writ out in Aesopian terms, they are also expressions and rather more immediate ones of what the Balinese regard as the direct inversion, aesthetically, morally, and metaphysically, of human status animality." (Geertz p. 11) After re-reading that sentence several times, I still didn't completely understand it because I had no idea what "writ out in Aesopian terms" meant.

Overall, I think this essay would have been much easier to understand and also more enjoyable to read, if the author had used a simpler writing style with less 'technical' terminology.
