In the text 'Maestro', Goldsworthy explores the theme of betrayal through Paul in his adolescence in Darwin. During Paul's time in Darwin he manages to betray nearly everyone he meets and comes close to. As a part of Paul's growth he needs to betray his friends for others to move on into adulthood and become wiser. We see this in action when he ignores Bennie Reid for the 'Rough Stuff' crew. Paul also manages to betray the ones he loves and care for such as Keller, Rosie and himself, Paul uses betrayal as a step forward and demonstrates how far he will go far his friends and who he cares about more when it cares down to deciding.
We first see betrayal in the text when Paul moves on from his nerdish friend Bennie Reid, who is the school loser to the cool, school buddies of the 'Rough Stuff' crew. Paul's betrayal consists of dobbing in Bennie into a bully and denying their friendship to everyone at school. We see Paul denying his friendship with Bennie when the 'Rough Stuff' band members see Paul and Bennie together and ask the question 'are you friends?' Paul uses this opportunity to increase his reputation rather than breaking it by denying everything about have any friendship with Bennie. From this Paul now is no longer friend with Bennie and moves on to bigger and better things such as the 'Rough Stuff' band and the solo performance.
The most important act of betrayal is when Paul has to decide who choose over Keller or Rosie. From this dilemma causes the biggest betrayal Paul has yet to face. As Paul has his last confrontation with Keller. Keller starts to open himself up towards Paul and has learned to trust him, during this Paul faces the choice of listening to him or no longer keep his love of his life waiting. At this critical moment when Keller begins to tell him about his life in Vienna, Paul betrays him because of his distractions by thoughts of the semi naked Rosie waiting in the car in front of the beer garden. This shows that Paul seems to care more for lust, than love for Rosie because he desires the companionship of her. In the relationship of Paul and Keller lacks these fundamental principles therefore making Paul choose to leave than stay and listen to what Keller has to say about his life.
Keller wasn't just a victim of betrayal from Paul but he was also a victim from the very people he trusted. During the Second World War, Keller was a very popular and famous pianist, he also played privately for Adolf Hitler. From all the fame and people he knew, he was lead to believe that his fame would protect the ones he loves, his family. " I was assured Jewish members of Germans families would not be harmed". "I knew these people. These murderers. I had signed their concert programmes"(page 118). He tells Paul. When his son and wife is killed by the Nazi regime, Keller realises that he had been betrayed by everyone that he so called, 'friends'. From all the lies he ends up being the victim and from this Keller becomes a shattered man, leaving him with the only option to exile himself and run to Darwin. Help with essay on Btrayal
Paul manages to betray the ones that he is close to and the ones that he loves but also he manages to betray himself. Paul not only lets down Keller but also himself. "I should have stayed, listening, poured out his schnapps, lubricated his tongue"(page 118). Paul is too inpatient to listen and rather move on to his own career, forgetting about what he owes Keller for all that he has done for him. For teaching him the basics of life as well as music.
In conclusion, in the text 'Maestro', Peter Goldsworthy explores the theme betrayal through the young years of Paul relationships with everyone he meets in Darwin as well as Keller when he is in Vienna during the Second World War.
