My story begins with Scout and I walking home where Atticus was waiting for us to arrive from the play. This night, when the scariest moment in my life happened, was unusually dark. The day was special for people in Maycomb because it was Halloween! The street was pitch-black and silent. The only sound was most of our footsteps, the crunching noise of leaves and wind. There were dim lights coming from the headlights of cars.

I grabbed the hock the end of the ham, which was Scout's costume for the performance, just in case she lost her balance. The sky was starless as we were crossing the schoolyard and Scout realised she had forgotten her shoes. We could not get them because as we turned back, the auditorium lights went off. That was when I thought I heard something. Scout, who did not hear anything, was continuously talking until I said 'Hush a minute,' I asked her to stop since I had heard it again. However, it stopped when we halted. I was getting suspicious of something but unsure of what. Scout was annoyed when I ordered her to stop for the second time. She believed that I was trying to scare her but I really had no intention of doing that. I told myself, 'I am only fantasising'. I presumed it was Cecil Jacob's footsteps that were following us; as he tried on us before. Scout on the other hand, came up with an idea that it was her costume rustling. I knew something was not right when Cecil did not appear after the bellowing of Scout because it was unlike him to hold out for so long. My instinct told me to take off Scout's costume as it could probably be seen from a distance. But I allowed her to keep it on, so she would not get cold in the late October weather.

Scout and I were under the big oak tree. As I put a little pressure on Scout's head, we stopped and listened. This time, the footsteps were thumping quickly, louder each time. I became aware of who the person was… it was… Bob Ewell. He was the one who had been spying on us from the auditorium. He was the last person I was hoping to see. I had to get Scout out of this mess, I screamed, 'Run, Scout! Run! Run!' I felt a flood of relief wash through me knowing that she would be safe now. Immediately, she lost her balance and fell. She was crying out for me, 'Jem, Jem, help me, Jem!' Bob Ewell did not miss this chance and he threw himself on her. IO saw the glint of a knife blade as he thrust it into the back of her costume. She would have been murdered if she was not wearing her stupid outfit. I had no time to think, I had to rescue her. I tried everything I could think of. I kicked, pinched and even bit him to give some time for Scout to get out of here and to ask for help.

Bob Ewell changed his target to me. He twisted my arm as far as it could go, and finally, it broke. He broke my arm! I was numbed in shock. I intended to get up but there was no more strength left in me. I wished I was stronger. In that short time, I thought so much. I missed our mother because if she was here, she would have protected us and would have been much more sensible. She would have hurried us home. I remember her telling me off for the first time. I was only five and I came home very late without telling Atticus or mum where I was. I have never seen her so angry. I froze when I saw her face. Even though I was young I could tell that I was in a big trouble. She always told me to come home early, never late, especially when I am by myself or without any adults. I should have listened to her that night. I thought I was old and strong enough to defend Scout and myself against anything. Slowly, my mind closed up and I was unconscious.

I had a long dream. My arm was hurting so much but it was no worry. I saw mum, the same way as I remembered her. She was the loveliest woman I know. Atticus and Scout were standing beside me. We all were so glad, so happy to meet her after the unbearable years. We were in a joyful summer garden and it was filled with roses white, red, yellow, pink and all sorts. Roses were mum's favourite flower. While I was examining the beauty of nature, she opened her mouth and said to me how proud she was of me for being so good to Atticus and to Scout. Atticus was staring at mum, his face was shocked but I could see how happy he was, an expression I have not seen for a long time. Scout was having fun. She had not even realised that it was our mum who I was talking to, and she seemed to be very blissful. She comforted me about the way I felt over Tom Robinson's case and we talked for ages, I felt so free to talk to her about it and when I finished, a bad feeling had been taken off my chest. I was going to ask why she had not spoke to me in my dreams for years when she suddenly disappeared without saying 'good-bye'.

I opened my eyes and found myself lying on my bed. Atticus was sitting on my chair in my room, quite uncomfortably. I had a guilty feeling because I was unable to bring Scout home safely. And then, it occurred to me of how I got home. I became curious, as I could not come up with anybody who would have rescued us. Scout could not have beaten Bob up and carried me home, that is just impossible. So, who helped us? Atticus? Heck Tate? Atticus woke up and saw me looking fine. He asked me how I was and I replied, 'I ain't bad. Atticus, did you bring me home?' I was surprised when he answered 'no, it was Mr. Arthur. We could talk about this later, son.' It was Boo Radley! He saved us; he came out of that locked house for us! This is exciting. I was annoyed with the fact I missed the opportunity to see him. Maybe he will come to see me, hopefully. Atticus went out of the room to call the doctor and Scout shortly after came in, hugging me with a shout of 'You are alive! You ain't dead! Thank you, Lord' I smiled and asked her what exactly happened that night. She explained everything. It seemed very confusing.

I ate some food and relaxed in my bed for the rest of the day. Atticus went to work and Scout slept like an angel. According to Calpurnia she was worried sick about how I was not going to wake up that she only had an hour of sleep. Calpurnia was in the kitchen making me the cookies I love the most in the world. Aunt Alexandra went back to her family for some reason. Finally, everything was back to normal.

I have learnt a few things from the night. I discovered that I was not as great as I thought I was. I was powerless. I was also taught that there are some people who are evil enough to kill children resembling the mockingbirds. Scout and I were lucky not to have been affected but Boo was not as fortunate. Boo did not deserve to be punished so cruelly by his father, his price could have been paid more fairly by the law. I was ever so glad to have a father like Atticus.
