Bertolt Brecht wrote the play 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle' in 144. He used the Verfremdung Effekt (literally 'to make strange') to distance the audience from the characters so that they would leave the theatre feeling obligated to solve or right the political/social problems put forth during the performance. In the first four scenes I think that the Verfremdung Effekt was successful in alienating the audience from the characters
In scene -'The Flight to the Northern Mountains', about half way through there are two ironshirts and a Corporal searching for baby Michael. Whilst they are travelling the Corporal shouts at them "you don't like marching. But that won't help you. It'll go against you. Sing!" Singing is not a usual pastime for soldiers and does not reflect real life, Brecht uses it here purposely to remind the audience that this is a play and these are actors, not the characters. The audience therefore are forced to watch it as a play and not empathise with any of the characters or enjoy it too much. Instead they watch the social injustice from a distance and are subsequently more uncomfortable, an uncomfortable state that forces them to go away and ponder these problems.
Throughout the entire play Brecht uses a singer to narrate the storyline instead of letting the characters put forth the plot. This means that the action is punctuated with this interruption which 'awakes' the audience back into realising that this is a play, not real life with real feeling people. There is a resounding line of song throughout with the singer, singing ironshirts and even songs from the main character Grusha as she narrates her feelings through song yet again to alienate the audience from her. At the end of scene 4 Simon returns from the war to find Grusha with Michael whom he thinks is her son. Instead of letting Grusha and Simon talk about it together, Brecht puts a physical barrier of a stream between them to keep their feelings apart, just as Brecht keeps the audience's and the character's feelings apart. Brecht intended this production to be staged with the minimum amount of fuss. He wanted sparse scenery, no costumes, minimal lighting and prompt cards for the audience to know what will happen in the scene before it begins. All this was meant to alienate the audience again from the action and prevent them from empathising with the characters.
Overall I think that Brecht's alienation technique has been successful in the play so far. He has certainly prevented me from empathising with the characters and I found the punctuated singing slightly odd and disturbing. To me this play has many techniques and styles that put across Brechts eternal aim; to affect the world and the way people see their 'duty' towards the world through epic theatre.
