Bertolt Brecht wrote the play 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle' in 144. He used the Verfremdung Effekt (literally 'to make strange') to distance the audience from the characters so that they would leave the theatre feeling obligated to solve or right the political/social problems put forth during the performance.
