The Coquette

Does it matter what society says or thinks when choosing the man of your dreams? Should you marry a man that is fun to hang out with, not educated but makes you feel butterflies when being in his company, or on the other hand, select a well educated man, mind-numbing type, which your parents adore, yet your heart don't seem to pound a bit when seeing him? Parents always want the best for their children; the question is do their children want a healthy husband or wealthy husband? Since most of the letters are to and from women, the importance and role of female friendship is revealed.

This sentimental novel written in an epistolary form by Hannah Webster Foster came upon to be more attention grabbing than I thought it would. I haven't finished reading it, due to other class assignments pending, but I sure can say that it is addicting in the sense that you just want to keep reading and reading to find out what is going to happen next. Like that Churches' commercial, gotta love it. In this novel you see many contradictions, injustices of patriarchal culture, societal attitudes (how society manipulates many lives), the role of the female circle, behavior of language, the influence of wealth. To my knowledge, I can say that each character in this novel falls under at least one of the above categories mentioned.

In the first letter, you see injustice patriarchal culture, the influence of wealth and behavior of language, because Eliza Wharton expresses her relief when her fianc'e dies, a relationship in which she was being submitted to an arranged marriage out of obedience to her parents which contradicts the supposed individual freedom. She is supposedly mourning at the beginning yet thankful and happy towards the end of letter I. She shouldn't feel like this to begin with, her parents are very ignorant in the sense that they don't care if their daughter is happy as long as she is wealthy. It's like living in a birdcage made of gold, just because it's made of valuable material doesn't mean you are happy in it. Another ignorant point similar to the one mentioned is coming from her friends, they also stress to her the importance of obtaining a wealthy husband for financial security rather than marry a man working for his money. We see the importance and influence Eliza's friends have on her. Eliza opens up to their friends and they respond with criticism. One of her closest friend was Miss Lucy Freeman would be a great example of what I just mentioned. Instead of understanding her beloved friend, and telling her "Do what her heart tell you to", or tell her he can get an education and a good job, but no she is just like the rest of society. No one cares about the feeling but just the social status you are in. It is easy to criticize by saying it's never late to get an education, but I didn't live in those times, and don't know how easy it was to obtain an education for men and women. By the looks of this novel, it seems that women had limited occupational options, and their only choice was to find a wealthy husband, get married, be a good housewife, and have children. Sounds stressful to my point of view, because I don't see the words love or happiness involved. Write my Essay on The Coquette for me

The position in which society plays in this novel is very high and leads to women's weakness in many ways. It was like being a Super star being followed by paparazzi by this; I mean to whom you would talk to or hang out with you would be spotted immediately, labeled and criticized. In the novel this happens to Miss Eliza Wharton, whom is visited frequently and admired by Major Sanford. Ohhhh, does her cousin Mrs. Richman watch her like a hawk. She dislikes Major Sanford too much to even bother go down when he is around. She immediately tells the young decent lady (Eliza Wharton) that he has a bad reputation and what will others think of her. You never know when one has repented of their errors, deserves forgiveness and willingness to change. In reality, the main point of Mrs. Richman about Major Sanford is that besides having a bad reputation, he is not wealthy, just simply a cock o' the walk and major looser.

Miss Eliza Wharton on the other hand, she is the total opposite of what Mrs. Richman thinks of her, she is the protagonist none the less the coquette in this novel. It's funny to say how marrying for position is suitable while flirting is frowned upon. She esteems Rev. Boyer, yet is reminded of the deceased Mr. Haly by being the boring type. Major Sanford on the contrary makes her heart pound 100 miles per hour. Eliza loves to be admired and told pretty things. To my belief, Eliza wants to play the innocent victim because of societies point of view, yet she is the devil in this novel, because she love to flirt and play with two men. Therefore, willful flirtation could only be interpreted as coquetry at that time. It is not could to do or plan something bad, because soon your plan will disintegrate and the ending up hurt will be you.

The humor I found in this story was of parts that Mr. Selby or should I say Miss Selby, because he acted more like a woman than he did of a man. He beat us in the gossiping part, that is our place and not his (just kidding in a way). He was hilarious when spying on Eliza and Major Sanford, then gossiping to Rev. Boyer about it.

In conclusion, I got a little carried away typing but this sentimental novel was very intriguing and hard to stop talking about. Up to what I read, I loved it, but ended up getting upset with all the characters, because no one really cared about what their sentiments were when looking for a husband. They were all for the social status and wealth, but what about the happiness? Friends, Society and Family played a major role in this sentimental novel.
