"Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past." This Party slogan reoccurs throughout the book and symbolizes the psychological manipulation used to control the minds of people under its wrath. 184 is a terrifying prophecy into the future written by George Orwell in 14, the same year that the Soviet Union exploded the first atomic bomb. Orwell writes 184 powerfully, convincing the reader that the totalitarianism society portrayed in the book is completely possible and realistic. 184 is an interesting and valuable read because of its excellent conveyance of mood, the portrayal of the main character as an anti-hero, and consistent use of irony throughout the book.

The mood in 184 is expressed so well that the reader is left with a convincing feeling of oppression. Overall, the mood in the book is very depressing. The world in which Winston, the main character, lives in is shown as grey and grim, with very little color.
