PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS
Achievements
The project was to complete four tasks which were set out in the project outline within a given time constraint. These were completed within the scopr of the project and delivered within the time scale specified.
INTRODUCTION
This project was to develop and demonstrate an understanding of how to efficiently design, layout and plan a manufacturing and production unit using decision support system software. This software allows various scenarios to be simulated to efficiently plan a production operation.
OBJECTIVE
The objective is to advise a gate manufacturing company on how to plan its' production operations and establish the most efficient way to run its' operation. Assignment should be in by 00hrs /11/00.
METHOD
I analysed each task given and created a simulation model per task. The tasks were -
Task 1 Create a simulation model to represent the flow of work through the various processes described.
Task . Modify the model to incorporate inspection of work items.
Task . Incorporate resource allocation in the model.
Task 4. Generate a report advising the company on changes it could make to make the companies operation run smoother and more efficiently.
The constraints are fifteen people with different attributes. See fig. work centres with time, and resource settings. See fig.
Approach
Initial approach was to try all different scenarios on the system to get a feel of what was possible to achieve, compute the data received from the software and eventually pick out the most suitable model for my ideas on the best utilisation of time and labour. Recommendations on the training and employment of resources are based on the information gained from the data generated by the software.
Four tasks assigned four were completed. These are -

The Report
Introduction.
The following report will summarise how the company currently operates. It will also give recommendations, how by identifying and solving problems, identifying and relieving bottlenecks the company can increase the efficiency of the operation. Options, which are currently being considered by the company, will be investigated and the improvements reported.
These options are, use of storage areas, cross training of employees, additional work centres and a combination of the aforementioned.
Summary.
The operation as it is has nine main stations with two reworks running in conjunction with two of the stations. See fig 1.
The company supplies the times for each station. See fig .
Resources, numbers of and type are also supplied. See fig .

The system in its' present form creates bottlenecks resulting in blockages. The first approach was to address the impact each modification would have on the company, then choose which to attempt first.
Storage areas Low cost instant impact.
Cross training medium cost gradual impact.
Workstations High cost instant impact if resources are trained.
Combination of all the above.
Chose storage areas to try first as the impact on the model would help identify where the resources were needed to be retrained.
Implementation of storage areas.
The first blockage occurred before the service shop highlighting a shortage of general workers, a storage area before the service shop would relieve the time pressure on the gen.worker resource allowing us to proceed to the next blockage.
CONCLUSION
The system works very well however it does need some refining.
All the tests that I put in place functioned, and conformed to the assignment
SUMMARY
Add product, Add client, pay supplier ,debit client ,increase stock, sell product, check stock, check amount and the client owes all functioned and supported each other
