Chinatowns are not just cities of Chinese people; the story of Chinatown is the story of an American neighborhood that have surpassed many struggles and had fully throttle the success of the present day Chinatown. American had come a long way since the first settlers came and claimed this great land of opportunities as their own. As the years went by, there had been much more people of various ethnicities and backgrounds with desires to be a part of this golden land of open wealth. Among the settlers, the Chinese became a big part of the making in creating the culturally, economically and socially diverse country of today. Long before, the successes of the present day Chinatowns, the Chinese had endured many great struggles; segregation, discrimination and various disadvantages just because they were originally seemed as inferiors and threats to the previous "White" settlers.

In the mid 140s, after the British defeat in the Opium War, there was a series of natural catastrophes that drove the Chinese to escape to the "Golden Mountain" the Chinese name for America. Californians met the Chinese with ambiguous feelings. As their population increased, Congress took actions against them with the Chinese Exclusion Act in 188. Chinese laborers were getting cheap labors and the Americans saw that as threats to the "White" laborers. Since then this law most aggregately set a foundation for the Asian immigrants. They were prohibited from bringing their wives, families to America. At the time, there were basically all males but no females in the segregated Chinatowns. This led to what was called "Bachelor Society" where these towns were filled with prostitution, gambling houses, opium smoking places, etc… Compare to the present Chinatowns, the previous Chinatowns were places no tourists would visit. The problem within these young single men with no women created much tension that led to the organized crimes of Chinese women smuggling to America.

Then in 106, there were earthquakes that destroyed many of documents and records of the immigrant status. From this tragedy, the Chinese took it as an opportunity to claim their citizenship. With citizenship status, they could bring their families over to America. Once again, the issue of immigration level increasing rapidly eventually gave suspicions to Congress that made them segregate the Chinese entrance to America. In 110, Angle Island near San Francisco was set up as immigrant centers, or in another word, detention camps to investigate the Chinese identities and status before they were allowed to legally settle in America.

As the population grew, their labor forces were seemed as threats to the White laborers. With the railroad construction first built in 186 by the Chinese and the cheap labors, the American blamed them for taking jobs away. Then, not just the Chinese but also the Asian race altogether were displaced and segregated in the work force such as manufacturing jobs. Left with no choice, the Chinese went into the laundry and restaurant businesses to wash and cook for the "macho" White men in the wild west of California. Besides the living status, life was hard for them. They were only allowed to live their geographically segregated places otherwise they could be harmed if they stepped out of their defined borderline of Chinatowns. There were cases of Chinese men murdered by White men but they were ruled they could not testify in court to defend themselves because they were not of the "White" race.Buy custom Ethnic enclave - Chinatown term paper

Then in 14, when China was an ally in World War II with the U.S. Angel Island was shut down by President Roosevelt's repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, ending more than sixty years of legalized racism and discrimination. The once bachelor society began to shift toward a new American Chinese community filled with families and children. Finally, Chinese immigrants were legally allowed to become citizens and to own property. The Chinatowns of present day are proven facts of their thriving forces and successes of "a unique neighborhood defined by its people, its institutions and its history" (The resource Guide) a history of welcome, rejection and acceptance. Today, San Francisco's and Los Angeles Chinatown has developed cultural autonomy which sustains many activities dance, music groups, artists, Chinese Culture center, and the Chinese Historical Society of America.

"Viewed within the context of the City of San Francisco, Chinatown is one of many culturally distinct neighborhoods that together make up the backbone of the City. Viewed within the context of America, Chinatown is an American working class community that has been a partner in building this nation with every other American working class community. Like all other American neighborhoods, Chinatown has been developed by the will and energies of immigrants."

Elaine Joe, "American Communities Built on Multiculturalism," Neighborhood Bulletin, A Newsletter of the Chinatown Resource Center and Chinese Community Housing Corporation vol.17 no.4 (Fall 15).
