Dulce et Decorum Est

Dulce et Decorum Est is one of the best known poems by Wilfred Owen about the first World War.

The title meaning It is sweet and right is ironic as it is referring to the horrors of war. The intention was not so much to induce pity as to shock, especially civilians at home who believed war was noble and glorious. It gives one view from one person who makes you feel guilty if you don't believe him and take his side, or that this is how all soldiers feel. Owen gives the reality of war and all the suffering with it. It comprises four unequal stanzas, the first two in sonnet form, the last two, looser in structure. Stanza one sets the scene. The soldiers are limping back from the Front, an appalling picture expressed through simile and metaphor. Such is the men's wretched condition that they can be compared to old beggars and hags. Yet these were young men and barely able to keep awake from the lack of sleep. Their once smart uniforms, now resembling old sacks, they cannot walk in a straight line as their blood-caked feet try to negotiate the mud. Blood-shod seems to give a dehumanising image as we think of horses shod not men. Physically and mentally they are crushed. Owen's words set up ripples of meaning beyond the literal and exploit ambiguity. Distant rest- what kind of rest? For some maybe this meant permanent rest! Coughing finds an echo later in the poem, while gas shells dropping softly suggests menace, stealthy and devilish. In line 8 the tempo slackens as a particular dramatic part approaches. During the walk back there is a gas attack and most of the soldiers put on their gas masks in time. However the action focuses on one man who did not manage to get his mask on in time to stop himself inhaling the poisonous fumes. Following the officer's command in line , ecstasy seems a strange word to use until we realise that medically it means a morbid state of nerves in which the mind is occupied solely with one idea. Lines 1-14 consist of a powerful underwater metaphor, with succumbing to poison gas being compared to drowning. Floundering is what they're already doing (in the mud) but here it takes on more gruesome implications as Owen introduces himself into the action through witnessing his comrade dying in agony. Owen sees the man drowning in a green sea and watches him choke to death in front of him from the Chlorine gas. The horrible descriptions of post-war effects are disturbing. Watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues. These words are like having your heart ripped out of you as punishment for all the things you take for granted. This poem really makes you think about how lucky you are and what men in history had to sacrifice to enable us to live how we do today. The tempo of the poem changes from men walking slowly, to the reaction of the sudden explosion of gas. Owen uses short vowels and sharp consonants to make the effect that everything is happening faster. At the end of the stanza everything seems to slow down a bit. Everything is in slow motion- this is because the men are inside their gas masks and everything outside seems hazy. Stanza three marks the aftermath of the attack. From straight description Owen looks back from a new perspective in light of a recurring nightmare. Those haunting flares in stanza one foreshadowed a more terrible haunting in which a friend ,dying, plunges at me before my helpless sight, an image Owen will not forget. Another aspect again marks stanza four. Owen attacks those people at home, who uphold the war's continuance, unaware of it's realities. If only they might experience Owen's own smothering dreams which replicate in small measure the victim's sufferings. Those sufferings Owen goes on to describe in sickening detail. The you whom he addresses in line 17 can imply people in general but also perhaps, one person in particular, the my friend identified as Jessie Pope, children's fiction writer and versifier whose patriotic poems epitomised the glorification of war that Owen so despised. Imagine the urgency, the panic that causes a dying man to be flung into a wagon, the writhing that denotes an especially virulent kind of pain. Hell seems close at hand with the curious smile like a devil's sick of sin. Sick in what sense? Physically? Satiated? Then that jolt. No gentle stretcher-bearing here but agony intensified. Owen's imagery is enough to sear the heart and mind. Dulce et Decorum Est brings home an individual level of horror and barbarity of the happenings of war. It also highlights twin gulfs between those who risk a horrible death at the Front and those who don't. Owen uses comparisons that bring feelings of sickness and revulsion to any reader. Sadness is too weak a word to describe the poem but is still the general emotion that comes to heart. This poem to me represents the fragility of life, basically how feeble we are.
