A very long time ago, during the medieval period, there lived a kingdom full of knights seeking to be the greatest of all. Once each month, the well-known, devious Black Knight would blaze into the kingdom atop his trusty black steed and challenge anyone with the nerve to a duel. The rules were simple the first knight to fall off his horse would lose. Many knights trained day in and day out in order to reach a skill level high enough to beat the Black Knight, but no one could ever hit him off his horse.
One certain knight who always dressed in white trained twice each day, telling himself, "I will become strong enough to beat the Black Knight someday, and once deemed the winner I will be called the White Knight - the most skilled and most noble in the land!" He swore to himself that he would reach his goal, and it was all he thought about throughout his days.
One evening, however, the knight's destiny would change. After enjoying a hearty meal at the local pub, he exited the building in order to go home and possibly practice his fighting style. There, in a shivering yellow lump, was the smallest puppy he had ever seen. "You must be the runt of the litter. Were you abandoned because you were too small?" The knight asked the shivering pooch. He took it home and gave it a meal, expecting the puppy to wander off afterwards, but it stayed. Not wanting to leave a helpless animal out in the cold (it would be very dishonorable), he allowed the puppy to sleep in his house, but only for that night.
Time passed, and the little yellow puppy did not leave. The knight continued to feed and shelter it each day and the puppy grew to be quite attached to him. It started following the knight everywhere, even to the knight's training grounds. The knight found concentrating on riding a horse quite hard when the puppy was around, for it would always nip at the horse's ankles and scare it. Finally, sick of always having his important training sessions interrupted, the knight took the puppy aside and explained that it couldn't follow him everywhere. "You must stay at the house," he explained, "You are too small to help me train-all you do is scare my horse. I am sorry, but you are not big enough to be of any use to me and therefore you cannot follow me around all the time as if I was your friend. I am only taking care of you until you grow big enough to take care of yourself...that is all. Defeating the Black Knight is the only goal I have, and I cannot let you interrupt my training for that glorious day." And with that the knight continued his training, certain that the puppy would not bother him again.
Finally, on one fateful afternoon, the Black Knight rode into the kingdom on his black steed and proposed his challenge to anyone who would accept it. The knight gathered his courage and mounted his horse, determined to defeat the Black Knight in front of the excited spectators. The two opposite-coloured knights began dueling, each one putting all his skill into his blade. The knight fought his hardest, but the Black Knight was too quick. The knight was hit hard in his shoulder by the Black Knight's sheath and he felt himself slip to the right of his saddle. He dropped his sword and used both hands to hang onto his horse, for he knew if he fell off he would lose. The Black Knight raised his blade and prepared to strike the knight in his vulnerability, but at that very moment a small streak of yellow bolted from the crowd to the black horse. The little puppy gathered all of his strength and bit the horse's front ankle, directly above the hoof. The horse reared and the Black Knight was thrown to the ground. The crowd cheered as the new hero slowly hoisted himself back atop his horse. "The Black Knight is finally defeated!" They cried, "We have a new hero...the White Knight!"
The crowd danced and celebrated, but the White Knight knew he had something to do before he joined the festivities. He knelt down on one knee and took the yellow puppy by his paw. "You saved me," he said, "I was vulnerable and you went out of your way to rescue me, just as I had for you. I must apologize for what I said to you earlier, little one. You may be small, but that is no reason for me to cast you aside as a worthless animal like your previous owner. You must join me in my celebrations, for you are now my most trusted friend. You came through for me regardless of the way I treated you, which is more than any person I know can say." With that the noble White Knight and the little yellow puppy became the greatest of allies; one never going anywhere without the other.
Moral Little friends can still be true friends.
