History of Investigation
In 111, German Professor Katurinkle, stumbled upon fossil bones while looking for butterflies in the gorge. The most famous of the excavators are Louis & Mary Leaky. Between 15 and 15, the couple excavated numerous sites in the Oluvai Gorge and published a monograph on the Olduvai stone tool.
Site Description
The Olduvai Gorge is an archaeological site located in the eastern Serengeti Plains, (East African Rift Valley in Northern Tanzania). The gorge is a steep sided ravine about 0 miles long, 00 feet deep and runs over 6,500 km from the Dead Sea in the north to Beira in the south. Exposed deposits show fossil fauna, many hominid remains and items belonging to the one of the oldest stone tool technologies, called Olduwan. The time span of the objects recovered date from ,100,000 to 15,000 years ago.
Major Discoveries
During the 10s, Paleontologist Hans Reck found numerous fossil animal bones, including an extinct elephant, which he named after himself. In 15, Mary Leakey discovered a hominid fossil (Zinjanthropus) believed to be 1,750,000 years old. In 161 Louis Leakey unearthed the fossil (Homo habilis) at Olduvai, which he believed to be a direct ancestor of Homo sapiens. The footprints of animals and early hominids have also been found in the gorge.
Dating
Zinjanthropus (Mary Leakey, 15) is believed to have lived 1.8 million years ago. The footprints of animals and early hominids dating back .5 million years were also found.
Importance
The discoveries in the gorge, especially those made by the Leakey's have changed the timeline and order that human evolution is viewed thought to have occurred.
