Beowulf Comparison
The Anglo Saxon story Beowulf is one of the most important pieces of English Literature. It tells the story of Beowulf who saves the Danes and kills off Grendel and the murderous monster's mother. Along with the story came the movie The 1th Warrior, which is based on the story. The movie shows the events in the mythical story of Beowulf as true and realistic. The 1th Warrior and the written version of Beowulf have many differences but also show surprising similarities throughout both entireties.
There are many ways in which the written version of Beowulf and the movie are different. The first of which is that they differ in number of Vikings sent to fight. In the movie, there are thirteen warriors sent to fight. The written version describes Beowulf and the "bravest and best of the Geats, fourteen in all" (11). Another significant difference is that the written version describes only one Grendel, "coming as often as he could, coming alone, bloodthirsty and horrible" (81). Although in the movie The 1th Warrior, there are many Vendels dressed like monsters. The last difference is that in the movie, there is an added character that hails from an eastern land. This is Hollywood's way of showing how the legend got passed on. In the written version, this character does not exist. He would be the one telling the story and doesn't exist.
There are many ways in which the written version of Beowulf and the movie are alike. First, in the movie, Beowulf talks of death at the table in Herot (Viking social hall) and knows that he will soon die. In the written version, he also talks of death in lines 74-75 in which he speaks "And I think if my time will come, there will be nothing to mourn over, no corpse to prepare". Another way the two are alike is that in the movie, it is obviously the Viking times in the sixteenth century as shown through their customs and everyday life. The written version describes also describes the same time period and Vikings as in line 110 where the narrator speaks on "Beowulf, strongest of the Geats". The Geats are from the same time period and area that the Vikings were around. The last similarity is that in both the movie and the story, the men go into the lair of the enemy. In the story, Beowulf goes into the "monsters lair" as shown in lines 4-45 where the narrator describes the lake whereas "no one knows it bottom, no wisdom reaches such depths. In the movie, Beowulf and his men go into the cave of the Vendels and kill the "mother".
