The Birds by Daphne Du Maurier (short story)

"The birds" by Daphne Du Maurier is a dramatic and gripping short story. Du Maurier uses excellent word choice and skilful technique to create tension and suspense throughout the story. The story follows a very unusual and far-fetched plot about birds that have turned violent towards the population of a small seaside town due to a change in the weather. Nat Hocken, a regular family man becomes his family's only means of survival.

Du Maurier tries to create scenes of suspense from the very beginning of the story. The very first line, "On December the third the wind changed overnight and it was winter" is already creating an uneasy feeling as if something bad is about to happen due to the change of the wind. The author then goes on to build up even more suspense by telling us how "The birds had been even more restless than ever this fall of the year". The restlessness and agitation of the birds creates a lot of tension but so does the strange partnerships described between the different kinds of birds.

"The jackdaw and gull, mingled in strange partnership, seeking some sort of liberation never satisfied, never still".

There is tension being built right from the beginning of the story but more so just before the attack on Nat's children. The first encounter Nat experienced with the birds was in his bedroom when he was inspecting the window and one flew at his eyes. This is then followed by the attacks on Nat's children. A lot of the tension built up throughout the story is lost when Nat hears the notice stating the current problem with birds elsewhere and the necessary precautions to take. I think that if Nat was not warned and had to find his own means of prevention the story may have been more exciting. On the other hand the inclusion of the notice from the Home Office shows how serious the situation is getting which does help to build suspense. More suspense is created when Nat is preparing his defences. "He was no thinking of the Robins and the Sparrows. He was thinking of the Gulls." this shows that Nat feels unsafe and vulnerable creating giving the reader a feeling of anticipation. When Nat is not worried about the smaller birds it makes you wonder if his defences are going to hold.

There was a great build up of tension leading up to and throughout the second night of the attacks. The first build up was when the gannet crashed to the ground and was followed by a tension filled attack. The lines "Wings brushing the surface, sliding, scraping, seeking a way of entry, The sound of many bodies, pressed together, shuffling on the sills. Now and again came a thud, a crash, as some birds dived and fell" are an outstanding piece of writing where Du Maurier describes the way the birds are forcing themselves at the doors and windows desperate to get in. The vast amount of birds and the actions of the birds helps to make the reader want to read on. The constant "shuffling", "stabbing", "beating" and "sweeping" of the windows shows just how persistent and determined the birds are as if they had some kind of purpose driving them. Du Maurier builds up tension when Nat's dream is filled with uneasy feelings as if he has forgotten something important. The lines "He dreamt uneasily, because through his dreams there ran a thread of something forgotten. Some piece work, neglected, that he should have done" show this and makes the reader anxious and curious building suspense.

The impression given is that Nat has given up. The words "I'll smoke the last fag" and "He threw the empty packet on the fire, and watched it burn." This loses some of the suspense as it leaves the reader the impression that Nat and his family die.

Overall I feel Du Maurier has been successful in creating suspense from start to finish. "The Birds" is a very exciting, tense and interesting short story. The plot is very engrossing, unpredictable and builds up a lot of suspense but also a little far fetched for some readers. The perspective used is very interesting. It develops Nat in great detail letting the readers sympathise with him but it also leaves the other characters a little undeveloped. 'Whatever "in love" means'

Was Charles' response when asked if he was in love with Diana, during the engagement interview. The repetition of the word 'love' becomes apparent in the first few lines outlining one of the themes behind the poem. This refers to the idea that the world was in love with Diana and how she is greatly missed. Assonance is used in the last line of the first stanza in order to draw attention to the words 'vividly' and 'gifted' suggesting Diana was talented.
