The expression of a catastrophe is a way for the poet to heal through loss and help them discover what is causing certain emotions. Throughout life everyone experiences a loss, whether it is the death of a loved one or the ending of a relationship. In Edna St. Vincent Millay's "Sonnet II" we see the ability of a poet to find the beauty of nature in tragedy. The main purpose of the poem is to convey that time does not have a positive effect of getting over a casualty while adding a modern form to the traditional Italian sonnet.

Millay was one of the few female poets during the rapid social change of the 0th century. Through poetry that was transgressive and traditional, Millay provided symbolic access to modernity for her audience. With the second quatrain the poet continues her imageries of nature with similes. "The old snows melt from every mountain-side" in line 5 is a way for the speaker to express that her mourning has continued from day to day, to a longer period of time. Snow melting shows the action of time passing from winter into spring. The next line continues this seasonal comparison. "Last years leaves" becoming smoke refers to the long transition of time from fall into winter. During fall it was customary for people to burn the fallen leaves of autumn. Eventually, as seen in the last two similes, the relationship has disappeared completely. Leaves that are burned and snow that has melted can never return to their original state. They are lost forever. All these images are used as similes to show the passage of time in short to longer periods.

The second half of the sonnet is found in the sestet's comparison of the action of nature to the actual physical action of the poet. Millay is trapped in both the physical world and within her mind. She is sunken so far into a world of despair, that she cannot see the good qualities of the world around her.
