This book is about two men who travel together in search of a place where they can earn the money they need to make their dreams come true. The men, Lennie and George, both work in the field of ranches. Lennie is good at skinning, and he can also rassel grain bags and drive a cultivator. George can do any job that is necessary on the ranch. It is hard for George and Lennie to find a good job and hold it because Lennie always seems to get into some sort of trouble. Lennie has a sort of mental disorder. He cannot remember things very well and he does not know how to handle situations of great stress. Lennie is a very big strong man, who does not know his own strength. George acts as Lennie's caretaker after Lennie's aunt Clara dies. George and Lennie have grown attached to each other's company, which is why they travel together from place to place.
The adventure begins as the two men are traveling through a foreign land. They are looking for a good Ranch that pays well. George and Lennie had to leave their previous home and town because of some trouble that Lennie had caused. Lennie has a passion for feeling and touching things. He has always liked to pet animals, mice mostly, and other textured objects. One day in town, Lennie saw a little girl with a pretty velvet dress. He wanted to feel it because he loved fabrics, velvet he was especially fond of. As Lennie kept on stroking the little girl's dress, she started to panic and scream for help. As Lennie fled, help arrived. The little girl told everyone that Lennie had raped her. As Lennie and George fled to escape as quickly as possible, everyone was looking for Lennie. There was a demand to find the escaped rapist. George and Lennie must now find a new home to start their lives again. After traveling a long time, George suggests that they settle down for the night and continue their journey tomorrow. George sets up their sleeping bags while Lennie gathers firewood. After successfully starting a fire, George and Lennie cook their dinner. A delicious helping of beans in a can. When Lennie sits with his back to George, George wonders what Lennie is doing. The boss tells them to wash up and get ready for dinner, and that they can start working tomorrow. After a few minutes, George talks to some of the guys that come into the room for supper. When George and Lennie are alone in the room, a man comes in demanding to know who they are. The man, named Curley, advances on Lennie. Curley gets mad because Lennie refuses to answer any of his questions as George has advised him to do. He storms out of the room leaving poor Lennie scared. The old man whom George had been talking to tells them that Curley is the boss's son, and he likes to mess with big people, like Lennie.
The next day, George and the old man, Slim, strike up a conversation. George ends up telling Slim about their past escapade in Weed, their old home city. Lennie enters the rook, shoulders hunched over, and he gets on the bed and lies down. George asks Lennie to take the puppy outside. Lennie does not understand what puppy he is speaking about. George catches Lennie with a puppy on his bed and he tells him to take it back to its mother. Slim's dog had a litter of puppies and he said Lennie could have one. A bunch of men, Candy, Carlson, and Whit come in to play cards with George, Slim, and Lennie. They strike up a conversation that leads to the opinion that Candy's dog carries a bad odor. While all the guys go to work, George and Lennie are left by themselves to talk freely. Soon, Candy suggests that they had better leave, because all the men were going to come back soon.
When all the men come back, they decide to play horseshoes. Everyone but Lennie and Crooks are invited. Lennie goes to the barn to visit his puppy. He discovers that his puppy is dead, because he squeezed it too hard. He gets mad and throws it against the wall, but then retrieves it as he mourns for his loss. Then, Curley's wife walks into the room. They start to talk, even though Lennie is not supposed to talk to her, as George warned him. She finds out that Lennie loves to feel things. So she tells him that he can touch her silky smooth hair, as long as he does not mess it up. As he strokes her golden locks, he grows attached to them. The girl panics and screams because Lennie will not let go of her hair. Lennie covers her mouth. He tries to get her to stop screaming before someone hears her. She stops moving and only when he releases his grip on her does he realize that her neck was broken. Lennie had such a strong grip on her neck that it had snapped under all the pressure. He panics and remembers that George told him to go to the deserted land if he gets in trouble. Candy comes in and finds Curley's wife lying on the floor, surrounded in a pool of blood. He tells the others and right away everyone suspects poor Lennie. As they all run to get their guns for the search, George heads for the deserted land. The others get scared when they realize that one of their guns is missing. They assume that Lennie has taken it.
George finds Lennie hidden in some dry vegetation. Lennie asks George to end it all so he and George can go to their dream place. George takes the gun from Lennie and shots him in the back of the head. All the men rush to see George and Lennie lying on the floor. They think that George shot Lennie as revenge for what he did to Curley's wife, though it was not. The men are a little curious when they see Candy and Slim trying to comfort George because they do not understand what is wrong with George.
I really enjoyed this book. It showed that George did not abandon Lennie just because of his rough, and somwhat strong behavior. I think it was good for them to stick together. The plot was also rather entertaining. It was entertaining because it was easy to understand, and it was actually fun to read.
