Have you ever seen an add on television and gone out to buy the product its advertising? The dominant message found in all the corporate ads is BUY, BUY, BUY. Bruce Dawe's "enter without so much as knocking" and Green Days "fashion victim" both rely on language techniques to show society the effects of consumerism. Consumerism is a significant feature of modern society and the poet Bruce Dawe is highly critical of its negative influence. Throughout his work, Dawe sarcastically attacks the way in which people have been manipulated by the appeal of consumerism. Dawe alerts us to the fact that we have sacrificed our ethics and values in search of a more forfilled and enriched life.

'Enter without so much as Knocking' shows how consumerism has a negative impact on society. The poem depicts the life of a typical man, living in the suburbs. It starts off with the birth of a child. The sentences are intentionally made short and clear. As the baby begins to visualize the world he has been brought into, he sees signs, commands and expectations. Dawe stresses the point that the first thing that the baby heard was a voice of consumerism on television, as opposed to the voices of his family. The baby has been brought into a materialistic world where the television is on and Bobby Dazzler is preaching his false cliches to the household.

Followed by a comment highlighting the innocence of the child Bobby Dazzler's false heartiness and slogans do not influence the child. "and he really was lucky because it didnt mean a thing to him then". Dawe believes that the child is lucky because he knows nothing of the world he has been brought into. Consumerism really starts to come through here these people are brainwashed by television so much so that consumerism is a religion for them. The household is described with terms that we see as marketing slogans "Well-equipped, smoothly-run, economy-size" These terms give the feeling of mass production just as well-equipped, smoothly-run, economy-size cars. Again the fact that these people lack individuality is being focused on. The rest of the family are presented as stereotypes.

"one economy - sized Mum, one Anthony Squires- Coolstream Summerweight Dad, along with two other kids, Straight off the Junior Department rack." Every aspect of this family is described in a sexist, impersonal, dull manner. His siblings aren't described by their sex or age they are just summarized as children who wear the same clothes as everyone else.

"WALK. DON'T WALK.TURN

LEFT. NO PARKING. WAIT HERE. NO SMOKING." Bruce Dawe satirically mocks these signs by implying that everything about a person is controlled in this world.

"He enjoyed", the child's opinion, in the fourth stanza. Dawe is challenging this world of people with iced-over emotions. Dawe using Irony when he describes the sky as "Littered with stars" as the stars are pure and not soiled with the filth of mankind. We can see by Dawe's techniques and words in this poem that his main purpose was to open the public's eyes to the mishaps of society. He challenges society, pointing out all of the injustices and hardships that ordinary people face every day. He shows us how we can become selfish and materialistic. Green Day also challenges society with their song "Fashion Victim". Singer and writer Billy Joe writes this song to explain the inequities in the world are caused by consumerism. This relates to 'Enter without so much as knocking' as they both show how consumerism has a negative impact on society. It's started talking about the male society and then moves on to females. It then ends with what happens to these consumer driven people. The song starts by talking about crimes being caused by what people wear. "Hes a casualty dressed to the teeth, In the latest genocide". This is telling us that a man is in danger because he looks rich and is a target for a mugging. This warns us about the effects of consumer products and that people don't always think outside their world of suits and mascara. Joe then goes on to tell us about the media influencing our choices of consumerism. "She's a scented magazine" tell us that women wear exactly what is advertised in magazines. Joe is explaining that consumerism is in front of us all the time and it makes us feel good about ourselves if we dress like models. Also in that stanza "Living well and dressed to kill, But she looks like hell to me" is explaining that no matter how much make up you wear, how expensive your clothes are or how well you live, it is the person you are that counts. This is telling us about the inclination of society towards their clothes and rich appearance.

Joe uses a metaphor "cloaked with style, as your credit card explodes" to explain to us that society will run down their credit card and spend all their money in order to look good and to look stylish. The chorus is used to secure Joe's opinion on society. "You auctioned off your life, For the most expensive price". This tells us that there's a larger price then money when you live for expensive clothes, nice cars, big houses and style. You buy these things as you sell your individuality. It says that society auctions off their lives for the price of looking good instead of looking yourself. This song finishes with combined repetition and rhetorical questions "what's in a name?" This is asking us what's in a brand name that makes them so expensive? Singer/Song Writer Billy Joe writes this song hoping he will make listeners think more about consumerism and the way they live. I hope you have enjoyed my speech and in closing I ask you, would you rather wear expensive clothes and look good or have your individuality? THANKYOU
