The game of "Clue" is unlike any other board game! All of the characters in the game, including the "victim," are fictional. The game is setup like a stage play; it can be totally left up to the imagination. The scene opens in Mr. Boddy's palatial mansion. Mr. Boddy is the victim of foul play and is found murdered in one of the rooms. The objective of the game is to discover the answer to the three main questions. Who murdered Mr. Boddy? Which room was Mr. Boddy murdered in? What weapon was used to commit the crime? The answer lies in the little envelope resting on the stairway marked X in the center of the board. Any player, by the process of deduction and good common sense, can win the game by identifying the three solution cards.
The game board for "Clue" has nine rooms in Mr. Boddy's mansion. There are six colored tokens used to represent the six suspects. All six tokens are placed on the starting squares with their names on them. The six suspects closely associated with the game are Col. Mustard (yellow), Miss Scarlet (red), Prof. Plum (purple), Mr. Green (green), Mrs. Peacock (blue), and Mrs. White (white). There are six miniature weapons, which are placed in the different rooms. There are also 1 illustrated cards, which includes a card for each of the six suspects, weapons, and rooms. The cards are sorted into three different groups room cards, weapon cards and suspect cards. The cards are shuffled faces down and the top card from each group is placed in the little envelope. The envelope is then placed on the space marked X in the center of the board. Tokens may be moved forwards, backwards and clockwise but never diagonally. Two tokens cannot occupy any one square. However, as many tokens and weapons can occupy any room. There are three ways of entering and exiting a room. First is by throwing the die and moving your token along the squares through the doorway. Second is via the secret passage by leaping across the board corner to corner (without using the die). The third way is for the player's token to be placed in the room by another player. This is also known as the "suggestion".
The "suggestion" consists of a player naming a suspect, weapon, and room into which the player has moved. In order to disprove a suggestion, all players must view their cards to see if any of the three cards named are in their hands. If a player has one or more cards they are required to show only one card, which then proves that the suggestion is incorrect. When a player is satisfied that they know the three cards hidden in the little envelope, the player can than make an accusation. Then, carefully, so that other players do not see what's in the envelope, the player looks at the three cards. If the accusation is correct than the player lays the cards faces up on the table and he or she is the winner of the game. If the accusation is incorrect the player returns the cards to the envelope and forfeits the game.
Helpful hints and careful planning can enhance the chances for a player to win. Players should be extremely careful in examining their cards before stating that they cannot disprove a "suggestion." A smart player often deliberately makes a suggestion naming one or two cards that he or she holds in his or her own hands to gain information or to mislead the other players. By making suggestions and having them proven false, players will eventually be able to identify the three cards hidden in the envelope.
