I. What first interested me in reading Go Ask Alice was the fact that the story was based on a fifteen year old drug user. The cover caught my attention because it had her face in a dark shadow with the title of the book in the forefront. The cover made it appear spooky but,

II. The novel detailed the life of Alice as a teenager.

She basically had one friend and wasn't popular at all. Due to her father taking a new job she ended up moving to a new town. She began writing down the events of her life in a diary. She didn't feel as if she fit in her new surroundings.

She finally met a girl she clicked with at a party who was going to move to New York. This new friend was heavily involved in drugs and sex. Within a short time

without her parents permission. Once in New York she began the same bad habits her friend displayed. Soon all their money went to drugs and they became homeless.

Alice decided it was time to return home to her

parents. Shortly after her return home she met a boy who lived in Boston. They kept in contact by writing

between his visits.

During the summer she became friends with a girl named Jillian. Jillian was not like her friend that took her to New York. She was they total opposite, not into drugs and sex. Soon though she left for a Jewish Church Camp. Alice was alone once again. She began feeling lonely and obsessing about her weight and lost several pounds. On a return visit to her old town to see family she felt she had it all together. However, she was about to find out the opposite was about to come true.

She dove heavily into methamphetamine, ecstasy, dropping acid, and sex. She always had sex with she was taking some sort of drug because to her sex without drugs was no fun for her. She finally got the courage to notice she had a problem and told her parents about her drug abuse. They sent her to a Rehab Clinic to help her get over her addictions. She returned home and lead a

normal teenage life until, her parents returned home form a movie to find her dead. They called the police and the hospital, but there was nothing anyone could do. Was is an accidental overdose? A premeditated overdose? No one knows.

III. The Protagonist in this story was Alice. She had a goal but, the Antagonist characters, drugs and sex, stood in her way. Alice was a Dynamic character by changing her appearance, her attitude towards drugs and sex, and constantly changing her life style. She was a Round character to the extent that every event and though she had was detailed in her diary. I couldn't relate to Alice's character specifically because none of my friends nor myself have drug or sex related problems. However I have a cousin that had a drug problem. As I have grown, I have realized how addicted he really was. He got help in a Rehab Clinic, just like Alice, and is better now. His past drug abuse problem although left him with a huge problem. He now has a deadly form of

Hepaticas and was given only about 5 years to live. The said thing is that he is only 40 or so.

It was hard to admire someone that was doing the wrong thing. Even though I do admire her for trying her hardest to get her life back into shape, by telling her

parents she had a drug related problem and need help, and to have the gut and the courage to walk into a Rehab Clinic at only fifteen.

IV. I think every teen should read Go Ask Alice. It's an very realistic novel. It is a truly exciting book, and I would read it again some time if I have the time. It's like one of those movies you can see over and over again, but it's a book you can read over and over again. Parents I think would also enjoy reading this novel. They would probably have a better understanding of their teenage daughter or son if they do so.
