In Les Misrebales, by Victor Hugo, the character Jean Valjean, an ex-convict; raises a little girl, whose mother died at a young age, until he dies. First this quote, that was said by the narrator, when Jean Valjean just escapes from Javert. "Jean Valjean had the peculiarity, that he might be said to have two knapsacks; in one hand the thoughts of a saint, in the other the formidable talents of a convict." This shows that Jean has two different personalities, or sides, to him; the good, and the bad. "The thoughts of a saint" is saying that he is good and righteous in thought. "Saint" is used to portray the image of a holy, spiritual person. Next, "Formidable talents of a convict" allows the reader to believe that he has been in prison. "Convict" is a word that is attached to bad, evil people. When one thinks of "convict" they think of a criminal. "Talents" reveals that he learned a lot of skills while in prison, and could use those skills whenever he wants. So the "saint" part of his personality comes before he was in prison, while the "convict" comes from prison. Jean Valjean was only in prison for stealing bread to feed his family, and after jail he started to steal again. Thus he was a good person, but jail turned him into a thief and criminal.
Next the narrator says, "Marius went away without saying where he was going and without knowing where he was going, with thirty francs, his watch, and a few clothes in a carpet bag," this is said when Marius leaves his grandfather. First, since Marius did not know where he was going, one gets the impression that he is a wanderer or vagabond. Those kinds of people are beggars and/or criminals. "Thirty francs" is not a whole lot of money to have when traveling, so he is poor and can not get any more money. Next, "His watch and a few clothes in a carpet bag" shows that Marius does not own very many things. One may think of a homeless person when a carpet bag is mentioned. Because Victor Hugo uses "carpet bag" instead of suitcase, it emphasizes that Marius does not have fancy, nice things. The word "few" is used in such a way that it shows Marius had limited clothes, and he wears the same thing over and over. Again this is saying that Marius is a poor guy, and is a beggar. Marius is only like this because he is a young law student, and his grandfather will not help him.
Last, Jean Valjean says to Marius, "I was nineteen years in the galleys. For robbery. Then I was sentenced for life. For robbery. For a second offense. At this hour I am in breach of ban." This shows that Jean was in prison for 1 years, and he also escaped. "Galleys" is the word that the author uses to show that Jean Valjean was in prison. "Galleys" was the term they used for jail back in the older days, so that allows the reader to know he was in prison. Because "For robbery." is just the two words then the period, it seems as the author wanted the reader to know that it was just for robbery. People do not look at robbery as one of the most serious crimes, so he wants to make it looks like Jean Valjean did not to anything to bad. The part "Then I was sentenced for life. For robbery. For a second offense," Shows that he went to jail two times for robbery. This also reveals that he escaped from jail. "Sentenced for Life" means that he is suppose to be in jail for the remainder of his life, but he is not in jail. Since he went to the galleys the first time, it made him a convict with the "convict" attitude. Because he escaped it makes him a criminal. So prison in a sense made him a bad person. All of this was brought on because he went to the galleys for trying to support his family.
